Habana

I celebrated my cousin’s birthday the other day at Habana, located at the Lab mall in Costa Mesa. I always get worry when she picks the restaurant…because she’s pretty easy when it comes to food. To my surprise, it’s a cute Cuban restaurant for a “mall” restaurant. I wished I took pictures of the restaurant because the outdoor patio where we dined at was nice. However, I soon found out that the restaurant doesn’t have a bathroom. You have to use the mall’s bathroom.

All the girls were ordering Mojitos but since I had a long drive back to LA, I went for their red sangria. It was pretty good; I had to force myself to slow down.
Habana
We started off with complimentary bread. I liked that it was sweet.
Habana
My cousin’s friend ordered the tuna tartare. I took a bite…hey her friends should expect me to snack on their food. It was good—I probably should have ordered my own dish…
Habana
Another friend ordered the Sofrito Steamers (manifa clams, black and green mussells served in a white broth). If you don’t want me to touch your food, just order a dish with crustacean.
Habana
I ordered the potato croquette. It was ok and it did its job –helped soak in the alcohol.
Habana
I shared the sirloin in red wine reduction with grilled artichokes and Peruvian potatoes with my cousin. My cousin no longer needs me to recommend restaurants to her. The sirloin was juicy and loved the Peruvian potatoes with it.
Habana
For desserts…my cousin’s friend bought a cake from Vons…gasp. It was a sweet idea but from Vons or whatever grocery store??? Habana was cool and didn’t force a cake-cutting fee.

I would have been happier if we’d just chip in for one of Habana’s dessert..

If you’re in the OC and need a good restaurant for a large group, dine at Habana.

BARBARELLA BAR

DSC06465
Barbarella Bar took over the Zen Sushi space and completely revamped the space, making it a swanky, new bar to chill in Silverlake.
DSC06461
I caught the end of Happy Hour from 4-7pm on weekdays (Mondays are Happy Hour all night), well I was actually late by 10 minutes, but the bartender was kind enough to grant my drink at Happy Hour prices.
DSC06464
I ordered the Espressotino, which was a bit too strong for me on the coffee side; a shot of Godiva would have helped. It would be perfect for those who drink their coffee black.
Even though my stay was short, I’ll definitely be coming back for drinks—most likely on Mondays because the Espressotino would have cost me $12….

By the way, if you’re a smoker, there’s an outdoor pit fire to keep you warm.

CLIFF'S EDGE

You're almost perfect.

On my most recent trip to Cliff's Edge, my friend and I shared the eggs Benedict, the black forest ham with gruyere cheese crepe and the blood orange sorbet; we love to eat.
DSC06268
The eggs Benedict were almost perfect--perfect poached eggs, good ham quality, English muffin toasted just right, but sadly the Hollandaise sauce was flavorless.
DSC06267
Luckily we ordered the tasty black forest ham with gruyere cheese crepe--that's a must!
DSC06270
Although it was too cold outside to be eating sorbet, I was happy that we did; it was delicious!
DSC06272
Despite the flat Hollandaise sauce, I love Cliff's Edge. It's all about sitting outside with the big tree decorated with Christmas lights and the sea shells blanketing its roots -just be sure to sit next to a heater. Great service and good food!

THE GRIFFIN

WARNING: STRONG DRINKS!!!

I should have stopped at 2, and now I am seriously paying for it today. My SVDC (Stoli Vanilla Diet Coke) was more like SV with a splash of DC.

The Griffin is a great place to lounge and drink. There's an outdoor smoking area.

FIGARO BISTROT

Figaro Bistrot is a cute little bistro but the service is always slow...the most recent trip was about a week and half ago.

We sat there a while until a server took our order. He wasn't our waiter as our real waiter was....I don't know where...and neither did the server. I ordered the Prosciutto Panini and was very disppointed that they were out of fries. How the hell can you be out of fries?! Our real server brought out our food and failed to realize that I had no napkin or fork to eat my salad...so I swiped it off another table. Alas, when asking for the bill, our real server did another disappering act. Another server took our credit card. It's a shame how bad service can ruin a restaurant.

I give the Prosciutto Panini a 4-STAR and the service a 1-STAR.

LOCAL

We had lunch at Local over the weekend and the food was not bad! My turkey burger was HUGE! I love the bun! The balsamic vinaigrette looked watery but to my surprise it was not. B enjoyed his BLT with fak'in bacon and spicy french fries (it gets spicier as you eat more according to him w/out the blue cheese dressing). Their lemonade is just right, not too sweet and not too sour. I'll have to come back and try their breakfast!

FALCON RESTAURANT

Had my birthday dinner at Falcon and if I had to do all over again, I would pick another restaurant. Damn them for having such a nice outdoor patio! The whole point of me throwing a birthday dinner is so I can be stress free and not have out of pocket expenses. I would have given them a 5-star but OMG their rules, rules, rules!

Let me go over Falcon's policies 1st:

-party of 10 or more: will only accept 2 credit cards max (I'm fine with that as I was a waitress in my past life and it was really annoying ringing a bill with 10 ccs)
-$15.00 min food charge per person (I'm fine with that)
-dress code: no shorts or tank tops on gentlemen (but what if my friends have nice manboobs and legs to show off?) and no athletic attire (ok, I'm fine with that)
-Half of your party must be on time otherwise you lose the reservation (we live in LA where everyone is always late) (ok, i'm fine with that and luckily most of guests were on time)
-Corkage fee: $20 per bottle (I think that's standard...)
-Cake fee: $3.00 /guest (so it's best to order desserts there and share it)
-party of 20: you have to do a set menu and the price options are $45 or $65

Now that you're aware of their rules, let me go over my headache:

My party gradually got bigger to the big date...10 grew to 15 and grew to 19. To me 19 is under 20, but 19 is 20 to them and requested me to do a pre fix dinner. I was a bit peeve. The whole reason why I picked Falcon, is because it is a nice place, the yelpers like their food, and they had some inexpensive food options. I don't know what everyone's budget is and a few guests are vegeterians, so the pre fix is not going to work. I could have been a stickler and said 19 is not 20, but time was running out, and I wanted a stress free night and so I had a friend booked a patio table. Party of 14 is not 20 to them. Just to be fair, they explained that they needed prefix dinners so it's easier on the chef, but hey, just bring out whatever food is done out but keep the drinks coming. Another thing that annoyed me was that they set my friend's table inside when she specifically requested it to be outdoors next to my table. The manager wasn't rude but he had to think about whether or not to give the outdoor table to us. Dude, it's my birthday and you're trying to give me stress? Btw, we were one out of the two biggest party of that night; I would have said "Yes" immediately and adjust the other reservations around.

Ok, let me move on with what they did right. The bartender was great -he made my chocolate espresso martinis just right. I tried my friend's dish, the House Made Beef Tortellini and it was heaven! My steak frites was perfect. I give their food and drinks 5-Star. I forgot what the dessert was...but I'm sure it was good.

VERDUGO

I dig this bar. Verdugo is a chill bar with all the top shelf liquor/beer that has a great, small outdoor patio and a beer bong table.

They break their extensive beer list by the continent, so if I feel like having a German beer, I'll go for a Heineken (just kidding). Anyhoo, I don't drink beer. I went straight for their special drinks and ordered the Carrot Cake Martini, which was a little bit too tropically for me. It could have been the bartender's fault...she needed to look at the menu to see what ingredients were in the drink. I then ordered the Washington Apple drink (forgot the drink's name) but requested with Vodka (better than the C.C.M.), and again, the bartender needed to look at the menu...they only have a few special drinks on the menu. Geez.... after that, I decided to stick to my usual drink, and so should you.

SEVEN GRAND

I was teetering and tottering on rating 7 grand a 2 or a 4, but decided that they deserve a 4. Now, let me explain.. I had reserved a table for my boy's bday a week ago and when we showed up, they couldn't find our reservation. I didn't confused it with 7grand the restaurant as I specifically requested an outside table (there's no outside seating at the restaurant). The manager was nice, but could not do anything about the situation (all he has to do is just kick some people out --just kidding!) Luckily, we snagged a table in a less crowded area. Our friends had some trouble getting into the bar (typical around 11 on a Friday night) and the manager allowed us to make a list for our guests so they could bypass the line --guess that's the least they could do, but no, that's not the only thing they did, one of the guys (forgot his name...) who worked there kept checking in with us to see if we were fine and that's why they deserved a 4-star! The waiteress was nice --gave us a free drink.

If you plan on going to 7grand and it's crowded, order from the waiteress (p.i.t.a. to order @ the bar) and when you're half way done with drink order another one. Oh, and if you make reservations and they don't call to confirm, call to confirm...and get the name of the person who you spoke to.

PETE'S CAFE & BAR

So I was there last night because it's my friend and her girlfriend's spot. Every time they dine at Pete's, they always order the same thing: chicken with garlic mashed potatoes, house salad, the blue cheese fries, and of course, they seal their meal with Pete's bread pudding. To their surprise, the chicken and the blue cheese fries were no longer that kickass meal they recalled; they think there's a new chef in town...

I ordered the burger, and as Nancy pointed out, the medium burger was on the rare side. Nonetheless, very good and hit the spot. I was disappointed with the my shoestring fries...I was hoping the fries to be actual "shoestring" fries --you know, the really super skinny fries that you think there's less fat just because they're so thin.

According to my friends, they got the bread pudding right. Best bread pudding I've ever had.

The ladies bathroom is spacious and nice--you almost want to have your dinner there.

CAFE DES ARTISTES

Cafe Des Artistes is a perfect date place. Music is not too loud with dim lighting. The tented outdoor patio is adorable and warm enough for people like me who's always cold. I decided to be adventerous and tried their specials--non dairy broccoli soup and tilapida. The soup was surprisingly creamy and tasty. The tilapida was perfectly salted. For dessert, I ordered the caramel brioche, which was good but looked more like a flan....Service was a 5.

CITIZEN SMITH

I love the interior and the patio. Oh yeah, the food is good too. Drinks are strong. Service is fine. They started to show films on the patio (you pay an extra $8, but then you get a discount on your drinks), but it's really hard to hear the film...so I don't recommend If you plan on dining here, I highly recommend sitting outside (if you don't mind the smoke) and bring your credit card--you'll make a nice dent to it.
